Employment and Vocation

Employment advocacy and support services help blind and vision impaired people to obtain jobs and succeed in the open workforce. The Association employs a Vocational Officer whose role is to assist consumers accessing Centrelink and government-funded employment assistance services. The Vocational Officer is also first point of contact for all consumers who are in employment and need the Association's services at work.

Social Work Services

Social workers offer assistance in dealing with emotional and practical sides of vision loss plus a support service for post secondary students.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists provide support and training in daily living skills, ranging from household management to personal care. Advice, training and special equipment help people who are blind or vision impaired to live independently.

Recreation

Training and support is offered in a wide range of leisure and recreational pursuits (from handcrafts to sports) plus referral to appropriate groups.

Orientation and Mobility

Mobility instructors teach people to move around safely and independently. They may use a white cane, guide dog or electronic equipment.

Peer Support Program

Peer support programs put people in touch with others who have had similar experiences, for advice and support.

Post-Secondary Student Support

Support for tertiary students includes production of special format materials on demand, and liaison and advocacy for students in their interactions with their educational institution.

Residential Services

Hostel and nursing home accommodation is available for aged people. Vision impairment is NOT a prerequisite for entry.

We also offer a Community Residential program which provides training and support for care-givers in hostels and nursing homes. Workshops raise awareness of potential difficulties faced by blind or vision impaired residents and explore solutions.
