The White Cane

The cane is very useful. I take it to school with me every day. I use it to walk from my bus stop to my school. It means that oncoming people get out of my way. I find it hard to dodge all those people so my cane is very useful. It is also very useful when crossing the road. The cars stop if they see your cane.

Canes do not tell you which way to go. All they do is alert you of objects, steps, or changes in the level of the ground you are walking on. This may not sound like much, but it is very useful. It saves you from tripping over, bumping into things and falling over steps. I sprained my ankle because I hadnt got my cane out yet and I didnt see the steps. I race around Perth with my cane, and everyone gets out of my way. Most people have a fold up cane. It folds into four parts and has an elastic bit which you put around the cane, so when youre not using it, it is quite small.
