What's Happened So Far?
- Introduction To Self
Awareness
Judo Australia teaches self defence.
A course held for 13 to 18 year olds during the July 1997 school holidays and for 18 to 30
year olds in August 1997.
- Career Night
Held on the 6th August 1997 for all ages and welcomed parents and partners.
- Career Exploration for Students
For high-school students. Was held in August 1997.
- Outward Bound Camps
Challenging experiences in the wilderness for 13 to 17 year olds, held in
September to October 1997, then again in October 1998.
Inward Bound was a program for those who attended the Outward Bound Camp and
followed shortly after each camp. Inward Bound considered topics such as independence,
self- esteem, teamwork, stress and relaxation, and was designed to build on the Outward
Bound experience.
- Art Appreciation
This course offered five sessions in September and October 1997. It gave participants a
challenging journey through the world of art.
This course was held over two full Saturdays in September 1997 for consumers aged
between 18 and 30 years.
Also offered to 18 to 30 year olds, this short course was held in November 1997.
- Drama Workshop
This fun and exciting course for teenagers was held over four Saturdays in November
and December 1997.
- Self Advocacy
For 16 to 30 year olds, was held in December 1997 This course involved learning what
your rights are with regards to being excluded from activities, due to your vision
impairment.
Advanced Self-Advocacy
Followed in February 1998.
- Cooking
A number of cooking courses, held over several weeks, have been conducted at Burswood
House, for both children and adults. Each interested participant is teamed up with another
keen budding chef and are allocated one instructor between two. They then enjoy the
scrumptious food prepared!
- Clay Capers
A four week pottery course was held in August 1998, at the Associations Day
Centre. This proved to be not only creative, but loads of fun! Participants work was
exhibited at Burswood House later in the year. Some staff at the Association wanted to
purchase the items created by the Clay Capers!
- Essential First Aid
Australian Red Cross ran their one day, accredited Essential First Aid course at
Burswood House twice: once in September, then again in October 1998.
Colour My Day
Body Shop Basics
For teens and adults - although there was no interest from the men! This was a two hour
workshop with Body Shop, held at Burswood House in September 1998. It covered basic skin
care and make-up tips. This course prompted the upcoming "Style It With
Style" hair workshop.
- Feel the Rhythm
This two hour workshop was held in December 1998. It offered drumming, percussion and
singing African, Arabic and South American rhythms.
